Gavdos travel, tourism info

The "forgotten" in the south of Crete Gavdos or otherwise Clavdi, filled with people - especially campers - who is attracted by the mysterious energy of the island. Anchorage for travelers, African merchants and pirates, Gavdos is said to be the island where Odysseus shipwrecked and met Calypso. It is the southernmost point of Greece, and Europe, belongs to Crete and refraining approximately 22 nautical miles from the town of Sfakia and 170 from Tobruk, Libya. In the 1930 the island was used as a place of exile of communists. Over 250 people were exiled there. The harbor of Gavdos is Karavas, while the capital is Kastri, where the basic tourist infrastructure of the island is gathered. The island has few permanent residents living throughout the year and the infrastructure for tourists are few and basic. Gavdos has a total of four picturesque villages - Kastri, Xenaki, Vatsiana and Abelos. Gavdos, along with the neighboring Gavdopoula, is a station for migratory birds during the long journey from Africa to Europe and vice versa, and a shelter for endangered species of seals and turtles careta-careta. Gavdos has groves of pine and cedar trees, which once were abundant on the island of Crete. The scent of these trees is locally believed to be a powerful aphrodisiac, perhaps explaining Odysseus' long stay on the island.

Excursions and special places of interest in Gavdos

Apart from the excavations on the island, there are several interesting places to see. Seventeen small, austere churches adorn the island. Registered trademark of Gavdos is the old lighthouse that once towered over the rugged southwest coastline which, nearly vertical, stretching for about ten kilometers. Constructed in 1880 at an altitude of 368m. was visible from a distance of 40 miles, the longest distance in the world that time. Bombed by the Germans in May 1942 and almost completely destroyed. Today the lighthouse is reconstructed and dominates again at the same point, a few hundred meters before reaching Abelos. The lighthouse is one of the attractions of the island.  The building of exiles on Sarakiniko can be added, the Venetian castle on Kefali, the Roman and early Christian ruins on the hill of Agiannis, the tombs in Lavrakas, the famous Kamareles in Trypiti, the excavations at Sarakiniko and Korfos and of course, the small folk museum at Vatsiana.
