The prefecture of Pella is a limitary one belonging to the Periphery of Central Macedonia; it covers an area of 2500 sq. km and is inhabited by 145,797 people, according to the 2001 referendum. The prefecture was named after ancient Pella, capital city of the Kingdom of Macedons after the 4th century BC and the birth place of Alexander the Great, a strong economical and administrative center of the time. It is a place blessed with rich natural resources, picturesque towns and villages, rich historical past and interesting land, lake and mountainscapes. Capital of the prefecture is Edessa, built on the foothill of mountain Vermio with a view to the fertile plain. Edessa is famous for its waterfalls, its age-long planes and its abundant crystal waters. The biggest waterfall Karanos has a height of 70 metres.Other big cities in the prefecture are Gianitsa that is the bigger city of the prefecture and big economic and industrial centre. Built in the fertile plain that is crossed by the river Loudias it has rich agricultural production. In the region is the "Marsh of Gianitsa" that now has been drained, where the Macedonians gave hard battles against the Bulgarians. Skydra is an important commercial town and export centre. In its fertile plain are produced peaches, pears, cherries, and other fruits. The position of ancient Skydra where goddess Artemis was worshiped is placed on the south of the modern town. Visitors are offered a wide range of options: discover idyllic places, enrich one's experiences by visiting the archaeological sites of Pella, Longos or the Macedonian royal tombs, or, if one so likes, indulge oneself with alternative forms of tourism, recreation, sport and an environment offering all kinds of charms: a first rate ski center, Mt. If you visit Pella you will realize that it is not offered only for a relaxing time as the number of bars and clubs is rather great.
